Emotion is a powerful tool of persuasion, and nothing plucks the heartstrings like the pain and suffering many people experience at the end of life. The Albuquerque Journal on Monday used the emotional tale of three sisters, two of whom suffered and died from pancreatic cancer, while the survivor shared the heartbreaking contrast of one having access to life-ending poison and the other did not.
The article is entitled “One sister died in pain. The other passed away peacefully. A look at the rising use of New Mexico’s medical aid-in-dying law.” As we are a society increasingly driven by emotion instead of reason, it has become the modius Operandi of the media to use sympathetic stories like that of Phyllis Bergman and her sisters to sway readers of the ethical rightness of physician-assisted suicide.
Much like Canada and many other decaying Western societies, we see the culture of death spreading like wildfire through a dry forest. New Mexico is one of ten states that have passed laws permitting people with terminal illnesses to take their own lives. The list of states is all blue and includes; Colorado, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
These states also have the fewest restrictions on abortion up to the moment of birth and maybe just a bit beyond.
New Mexico’s End-of-Life Options Act went into effect in June of 2021, and according to state records, 170 people have drunk the doctor-prescribed drink of death. Maybe the title of the act is more realistic than what other states have used, such as the death with dignity act, but the result is a further erosion of the value of human life.
As we have seen most recently in Canada, the progression of death starts with a supposed relief of suffering, like the ABQ Journal story but soon leads to suicide when life isn’t going your way. It was the same for abortion, which was sold as only as safe, legal, and rare but, in the most liberal of states, is quickly approaching infanticide.
The progressive agenda will always lead to death and the suppression of human flourishing. It seeks to desensitize the population to the value of life so that it becomes easier to justify the next progression. Replacing objective morality with woke, subjective morality has dire consequences, as the Soviets, Chinese, and Nazis taught the human race in recent history.
